Ariana Witkin, MD

Pediatrician & Founder, Poppy Pediatrics

Dr. Witkin is a board-certified pediatrician and postpartum expert. She built Poppy Pediatrics to offer the care she wished she had during her three pregnancies and fourth trimesters. She believes the best way to care for babies is to provide support for their parents. Prior to starting Poppy, Dr. Witkin spent 10 years working with newborns and their families across the Pacific Northwest and Boston area. Her signature style is direct, warm and crunchy granola meets evidence-based medicine.

Dr. Witkin earned her medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She completed her pediatrics internship and residency at The University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hospital. She has received additional training in lactation and breastfeeding medicine from the Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding & Lactation Education and in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders from The Motherhood Center.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

What is the fourth trimester?

The fourth trimester refers to the first 3 months after birth. This tender time is for rest, healing and connection. It lends itself perfectly to home visits and to honoring this sacred time in your own environment.

What is direct primary care (DPC)?

Direct primary care is a private practice model in which families pay for care instead of navigating insurance. In Poppy's model, families pay a one time fee that includes 2 months of unlimited newborn care and direct access to their pediatrician. This model allows for transparency in pricing without any surprise bills from insurance, and allows the pediatrician to take on fewer patients. That means stronger relationships with each and every family. Superbills are provided for each visit so families may submit for out of network reimbursement with their insurance company.

Do you replace my pediatrician?

Poppy serves as the primary care pediatrician for your baby from birth through two months of age. Most families have four visits during this time. Visits are typically 1–3 days after delivery, at 1 week, 2 weeks and 1 month. Additional visits are scheduled as needed. At two months of age we transition care to the pediatric practice of your choice. Birth parents continue to receive primary care related to their birth from their midwife or obstetrician. As the primary care pediatrician, Poppy provides referrals to subspecialists and orders for lab tests as needed for the newborn.

What does a visit look like?

Home visits typically last 1–2 hours. Visits begin by checking in with the birth parent on all things related to postpartum and the newborn phase, including mood, sleep, feeding and/or lactation. All visits include a comprehensive physical exam of the newborn, complete newborn medical care and anything relevant to baby's health and well being.

What geographical area do you serve?

All visits are home-based, serving Cambridge and the greater Boston area, including: Somerville, Arlington, Medford, Lexington, Concord, Belmont, Bedford, and Lincoln. Not in one of those towns and interested in Poppy? Reach out! We try our best to accommodate other areas as is possible.
